Regarding the Commentary's phrase 'Fifth, purity of hearing and retaining': the cognition that retains what is heard acts as that which is mindful, and the immeasurable dharmas are that which is recollected. Retaining is precisely mindfulness; being endowed with both that which retains and that which is retained, he is a vessel of the Dharma. The treatise says: 'The secret dharmas spoken by all Tathāgatas: "all" clarifies breadth, and "secret" reveals depth. If one does not retain the Dharma, one cannot benefit others. Taking hearing and retaining as the expedient means. The word "immeasurable" contains two meanings: first, immeasurable in quantity; second, immeasurable in depth.'
