Regarding the commentary's "From the eight lines above downward," this is the third [part], which generally reveals that the eight practices above function as causes. Regarding the commentary's "It means that by means of the profound mind one can generate practice, and so forth": previously it was explained that the profound mind is the upāya for generating practice; generating practice is itself diligence, and therefore the profound mind is the cause of diligence. Second, because of obtaining cognition of suchness, one is constantly unforgetful. Third, through the aids to the path, superior power is accomplished. Fourth, through the path of non-abiding, by not abiding in emptiness or existence, or in saṃsāra or nirvāṇa, one is free from defiling attachment. Fifth, through self-recollection of the Dharma, one can sever the doubts of others. Sixth, through supernatural powers, one causes others to be reverent; reverence is indeed entering with faith. Regarding the commentary's "Seventh: the cause of rolling the wheel of the principles of the Dharma": this is the non-erroneous dhāraṇī. "Dharma" is the teaching, and "principle" is the doctrinal sense; spreading the transformation is called "rolling." That is to say, when the true Dharma is on the verge of extinction, one relies on other external texts to circulate, chant, and uphold the meaning of that true Dharma; hence, upholding the other noble teachings with dhāraṇī serves as the cause of rolling the wheel of teaching and principle. Regarding the commentary's "Eighth: the cause of teaching transcendence": fully speaking, the Śāstra says: "The cause of teaching transcendence is indicated by the sūtra's 'Because of being well sealed with the seal of the dharmadhātu cognition.' It means that in teaching others, through tallying with the dharmadhātu, one transcends grasping at signs oneself—meaning transforming while free of transformation—and also causes others to transcend." Next, it cites the Śāstra to explain it. From "This intent explains" onward, the commentary interprets the Śāstra.
