54.38

四「故論云涅槃道」下，釋成上義。古譯菩提名之為道，是故疏云「道亦菩提」，明論亦說菩提涅槃以為常矣。用是無常若別對菩提涅槃因者，即寂之照是菩提因、即照之寂是涅槃因，寂照既融二果亦融，故云「若相融攝固不在言」。

Fourth, from "Therefore the treatise says 'the path of nirvāṇa'..." onward, it explains and establishes the above meaning. Ancient translations rendered bodhi as 'the path'; therefore the Commentary says "'the path' is also bodhi," making clear that the treatise also speaks of bodhi and nirvāṇa as permanent. If function is impermanent, and if one separately correlates it with the causes of bodhi and nirvāṇa, then the illumination that is itself quiescence is the cause of bodhi, and the quiescence that is itself illumination is the cause of nirvāṇa. Since quiescence and illumination are fused, the two fruits are also fused; hence it says, "if they mutually fuse and subsume each other, it goes without saying."
