The Commentary's words, "The statement 'spoken in common' appears textually under the characteristics of the ground, yet its meaning extends to the essence of the ground," mean that the essence of the ground is the most essential and superior. Furthermore, according to the treatise-sūtra, initially there is no rhetorical question to introduce it; after explaining non-timorous good [determination], it immediately says: "Sons of the Buddha! These ten grounds of the bodhisattva have been spoken, are spoken, and will be spoken by past, future, and present Buddhas." Therefore, the treatise first says, "Furthermore, because these ten grounds generate and accomplish the Buddha-cognition and uphold it, as the sūtra states: 'Sons of the Buddha! These ten grounds of the bodhisattva,' etc." Only then does it take up the sūtra passage cited previously, clarifying that the six determinations of the essence of the ground are spoken in common by [the Buddhas of] the three periods of time.
