From the Commentary's words, "Third, in listing the names: to counter the ten obstacles..." onward, the Commentary text has three parts: first, a general explanation; second, a specific explanation; third, an analytical resolution. The first part is the text of the *Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi*, pointing to the section on exposition. However, the root treatise here has three sections: first, listing the ten obstacles; second, explaining the names of the ten grounds; third, illustrating them generally by metaphors. The present Commentary only expands on the second metaphorical illustration and briefly notes the first section. This is the present general explanation, and the text of the treatise should now be fully displayed. The treatise asks: "Why are precisely ten grounds of the bodhisattva taught? Because they counter the ten obstacles. What are the ten obstacles? First, the obstacle of the ordinary person's self-characteristic; second, the obstacle of erroneous practice; third, the obstacle of dullness and forgetting the dharmas of hearing, reflecting, and cultivating; fourth, the obstacle of pride in understanding dharmas; fifth, the obstacle of pride in bodily purity; sixth, the obstacle of subtle habitual defilements; seventh, the obstacle of subtle characteristic habituation; eighth, the obstacle of having effortful application in the signless; ninth, the obstacle of being unable to skillfully benefit sentient beings; tenth, the obstacle of not attaining mastery among all dharmas." The meaning is explained below.
