The commentary’s statement, “Now, following the foundational treatise, the names of the stages are briefly explained,” refers to the second section of the treatise. The treatise first asks: “Why are there ten stages, the first named Joyous (Pramuditā) up to the tenth named Cloud of Dharma (Dharmameghā)?” The commentary states: “Here there are two meanings.” The preceding is the treatise text; what follows is the commentary's explanation. “The initial completion of the two benefits” refers to the practice of the teaching: having previously cultivated and practiced, it is now newly completed. Because it cannot be surpassed by what preceded it, it is called unsurpassable. “Newly attaining the stage of noble ones” refers to the practice of realization: reality is the lineage of noble ones, and hence it is called a place. The realization begins in this stage, so it is called the first. “Unsurpassable” distinguishes it from what precedes; “first realization” distinguishes it from what follows. Because of the two joyous events above, joy arises, which is precisely the mind of delight.
