From “Here there is only one meaning” onward, the commentary explains [the third stage]. In this there are three points: First, in accord with the present sūtra text, what is heard, contemplated, and cultivated are known phenomena; right understanding in accord with phenomena is therefore called illumination, and illuminating phenomena clearly is termed manifestation. The phrase “what is heard in this stage” refers to casting aside one’s life to seek the Dharma in this stage. From “If according to...” onward, the second point cites the treatise to re-explain: that wisdom without practice is as explained below. From “However, the Cheng Weishi Lun...” onward, the third point cites other sūtras and treatises for explanation; because this single stage differs in name from the sūtra, it cites other treatises. In this there are four parts: First, presenting both sūtras and treatises. Second, from “Meaning attaining...” onward, the Cheng Weishi Lun’s explanation. Third, from “This, then, has three meanings” onward, the commentary explains the text of the treatise. Fourth, from “However, three wisdoms concerning the first...” onward, it reconciles this with the Daśabhūmika-śāstra. That is, the Cheng Weishi Lun holds that only upon attaining the three wisdoms is realizing cognition generated, so radiance of wisdom comes later. The commentary states: “This also encompasses the following two meanings.” In the commentary’s explanation of the two meanings, the former is based on internal realization, while the latter is based on external functioning. In terms of being able to burn afflictions, it should be called the Fire Stage; but fire merely burns and does not necessarily have flame, whereas here it takes having flame so that it can universally illuminate.
