The commentary’s statement, “Fifth, attaining supramundane cognition...” first presents the treatise text. Master Yuan’s view was that the above two sentences explain “difficult to cross,” and “difficult to cross” explains the meaning of “conquering” (sudurjayā). The present commentary simply gives a comprehensive explanation. From “This only...” onward is the commentary’s explanation. In this there are two parts: first, a general explanation; second, from “because of the third stage...” onward, a specific demonstration. First, from “the third stage” onward is the first difficulty to cross; from “the fourth stage” onward is the second difficulty to cross. From “largely stagnating...” onward concludes the preceding difficulties: the third stagnates in the worldly, and the fourth stagnates in the supramundane, which is called stagnating in the two extremes. The above clarifies the objective sphere to be crossed. From “now attaining the supramundane” onward clarifies the method that is able to cross: this sentence indicates that by attaining the fourth stage, the worldly has already been crossed. The treatise states: “Because ten minds of equanimity are truly difficult to attain.” From “further being able to follow...” onward is the treatise text: skilful upāya-cognition has already entered the fifth stage and is able to cross the supramundane. The first three stages stagnated in the conventional and contradicted the real; the fourth stagnated in the real and contradicted the conventional. Now having crossed the former, one transforms sentient beings without attachment, so the conventional does not contradict the real; and realizing supramundane cognition, one initiates function, so the real does not contradict the conventional. Thus the preceding four stages cannot surpass it. If so, would it not also be the case from the sixth stage upward? Therefore, the commentary reconciles this: “Because this is newly attained.”
