On the Commentary's text from “Just as a person viewing space…” onward: this is the fourth [point], demonstrating it through an analogy. Eyes may be small or large, but space is without distinction. It was therefore on the basis of this principle that Master [Daosheng] established the doctrine of sudden awakening, clarifying that only the Buddha's awakening realizes tathatā exhaustively. The sages of the ten grounds are all within the scope of faith and have not yet completely realized tathatā. Thus he said: “Now, that which is termed ‘sudden’ clarifies that principle cannot be divided. ‘Awakening’ speaks of ultimate illumination. When clarifying awakening through suddenness, its meaning does not admit of duality. Non-dual awakening tallies with undivided principle; when principle and cognition are both released, this is called sudden awakening.” This is precisely the meaning. Although it diverges greatly from conventional discussions, it is also a mystery beyond conventional bounds.
