Regarding the commentary's statement, "During the day, hold one's mind," and so on: this is from the Bequeathed Teaching Sūtra. The sūtra states: 'O you bhikṣus! During the day, diligently cultivate wholesome dharmas with your mind, not allowing time to be lost. Do not neglect this in the early night or late night either. In the middle of the night, recite the sūtras to refresh yourselves; do not, on account of sleep, let an entire life pass in vain without gaining anything. You should reflect that the fire of impermanence burns the worlds; seek your own deliverance early, and do not sleep. The thieves of the afflictions constantly watch for an opportunity to kill people, worse than mortal enemies; how can you sleep without alerting yourselves? The poisonous serpent of afflictions sleeps in your mind, just like a black viper sleeping in your room; you should use the hook of upholding the precepts to eliminate it early on. Only when the sleeping serpent has been cast out may you sleep in peace; to sleep when it has not been cast out is to be shameless. The clothing of shame is the foremost among all adornments. Shame is like an iron hook that can restrain people from unrighteousness. Therefore, bhikṣus, you should always feel shame and guilt, never letting it lapse for a moment. If you abandon shame, you will lose all merits. One who has guilt possesses wholesome dharmas; if one is without guilt, one is no different from beasts.' Explication: Simply by examining what has been cited, the commentary's text is easily understood.
