Language

Regarding the Commentary's statement, "Second, because of greed for living beings": the former was greed for wealth; this is greed for taste. Regarding the statement, "Now, possessing the benevolence of empathy and compassion": a secular classic states, "Empathy and compassion without killing is called benevolence (ren)," explaining the word "benevolence" in the sūtra. "Taking oneself as the measure" explains the character shu (consideration/forbearance). That is, the tenth fascicle of the Nirvāṇa Sūtra states: "All fear the knife and the stick; none do not cherish their life. Taking oneself as a measure, do not kill, do not beat."
