Regarding the Commentary from "Therefore the three bodily [actions] each possess three relinquishments" below: this comprehensively evaluates the three karmas, all of which reflect the intention of the treatise. Greed and so on universally serve as causes for the seven branches of action, and the causes of the three bodily actions also utilize the volitional mind; however, their arising has varying difficulty, which is why the treatise makes this explanation. Thus we know that causes of arising naturally have two kinds: proximate and remote. Because bodily karma is difficult to arise, greed and so on are clarified as remote causes, concealing the proximate cause of the volitional mind. Vocal karma is easy to produce, so it merely reveals the volitional mind as the proximate cause, concealing the remote causes of greed and so on; thus, the relinquishment of the cause is not clarified. For instance, if someone first covets wealth or sex, and later uses the volitional mind to give rise to false speech, then greed and so on serve as the cause of arising; thus false speech mostly stems from greed, while harsh speech and divisive speech mostly stem from hatred and delusion. Furthermore, as with wives and wealth, because of insufficiency one engages in sexual misconduct and theft; thus we know there are also those who engage in false speech because of insufficient wealth. Hence a secular classic says: "Poverty does not set an appointment with unfaithfulness, yet unfaithfulness arrives of itself." Thus there is also the cause of receiving and keeping. Therefore we know that the author of the treatise, in accord with the conciseness of the sūtra text, merely followed the distinction of difficulty and majority to state that the body possesses three relinquishments, while the four vocal actions possess only two.
