Regarding the Commentary's statement, "First, the articles of utility refer to gold and the like": the coveted objects encompass both wealth and sensual pleasure, but the treatise briefly mentions wealth. It is also possible that a resolved greed toward sensual form belongs to the realm of sexual misconduct, which is why it is not discussed here. Regarding the Commentary's statement, "Third, ultimately giving rise to thoughts of seizing constitutes covetousness," and so forth: the translation of the treatise has two instances of "covetous mind." The sūtra says: "Not giving rise to a covetous mind, not seeking, not wishing, not giving rise to a covetous mind." It is mostly that the translator, seeing the repetition, omitted one "covetous." Comparing it again to the treatise's sūtra text, the order was inverted. Following the order of the treatise, the Commentary also interprets the sūtra in reverse order, from light to heavy. Thus, the covetous mind encompasses both the general and the specific: in general, all three phrases are of the nature of non-covetousness.
