Regarding the commentary's "If based on the root being eliminated, grief and sorrow are accordingly exhausted": bodily sensation is called suffering, while mental sensation is called grief. First, due to bodily suffering, mental grief subsequently arises; therefore, suffering is said to be the root. Grief is a great obstacle to nirvāṇa, so it is mentioned specifically. If based on the root, it should say "absence of suffering."
