Regarding the commentary’s [statement], “Or, depending on the minds at the three times…” and so forth, it briefly presents four levels: First, in terms of time: as in the time when one desires to perform the wholesome, the time when one is performing the wholesome, and the time after one has performed the wholesome. When all three times are weighty, it is the superior wholesome; when one or two are light, it is middling; when all three times are light, it is inferior. Second, in terms of the object: as in non-killing—not killing mosquitoes and gnats is superior, not killing beasts is middling, and not killing humans is inferior wholesome; killing is the reverse of this. Third, in terms of the gravity of the mind: in relation to a single object, such as killing a beast, a fierce and weighty mind, a middling mind, and a mind of killing out of no other choice constitute the three grades—superior, middling, and inferior—of evil. The three levels of non-killing are the three grades of wholesome. Fourth, in terms of “performing it oneself or instructing others”: having both oneself and others is superior, only oneself and not others is middling, and not performing it oneself but instructing others to do so is inferior.
