Regarding the commentary's phrase "the formless" onward: setting forth the essence of the formless. Within this there are two parts: first, correctly explaining it by clarifying it according to the Hīnayāna; second, evaluating it according to the various teachings. Now in the first part, citing the Kośa's phrase "the four aggregates separated from lower grounds": the subsequent verse says: "Together with the upper three access concentrations, / It is collectively termed the elimination of notions of form. / 'Formless' means without form; / Subsequent form arises from the mind." Now this directly cites the first seven characters to set forth the essence of the formless. That is, it also uses one-pointedness of mind subsumed under the nature of wholesomeness, taking wholesome samādhi as its intrinsic nature, but its attendants merely exclude the form aggregate, because in the formless realm there is no attendant form. Its separation from lower grounds belongs to a separate establishment. The four names differ within a single line; it was cited here merely in passing, and below it will be explained separately.
