61.21

疏「然四禪通說有十八支」者，第二歷禪有異。於中又二：先正明、後出所以。今初。《俱舍》頌云「初禪具五支，尋伺喜樂定。二禪具四支，內淨喜樂定。三禪具五支，捨念慧樂定。四禪具四支，捨念中受定。」故今疏云「初三各五，二四皆四。」

Regarding the commentary's phrase "however, speaking generally of the four dhyānas, there are eighteen factors": this is the second part, distinctions across the successive dhyānas. Within this there are also two parts: first, correctly clarifying; second, setting forth the reasons. Now the first. The Kośa verse says: "The first dhyāna possesses five factors: / Investigation, scrutiny, joy, pleasure, and concentration. / The second dhyāna possesses four factors: / Internal purity, joy, pleasure, and concentration. / The third dhyāna possesses five factors: / Equanimity, mindfulness, discernment, pleasure, and concentration. / The fourth dhyāna possesses four factors: / Equanimity, mindfulness, neutral feeling, and concentration." Therefore the present commentary says: "The first and third each have five; the second and fourth both have four."
