Regarding the commentary's "Next, diligent effort" and so forth: second, specifically showing the protocol of cultivation; the commentary follows the sūtra's brevity. According to the Abhidharmasamuccayavyākhyā, it says: "Furthermore, cultivation refers to the distinctions of cultivation through desire, diligence, spurring on, vigorous striving, unceasing effort, correct mindfulness, correct comprehension, and non-negligence." Here there are nine cultivations. 1. The treatise says: "Cultivation through desire: to counteract the secondary affliction of non-attention. 2. Cultivation through diligence: to counteract the secondary affliction of indolence. 3. Cultivation through spurring on: to counteract the secondary affliction of sinking and restlessness. 4. Cultivation through striving: to counteract the secondary affliction of a base and inferior mind. A base and inferior mind means, regarding the merits realized in the lower and superior grades, producing a nature of timidity due to self-contempt. 5. Cultivation through vigorous effort: to counteract the secondary affliction of laxity and weariness. Laxity and weariness means being afflicted by places that attract mosquitoes, gnats, and so forth. 6. Cultivation through unceasing effort: to counteract the secondary affliction of producing contented joy upon obtaining a few wholesome dharmas; due to producing contented joy upon obtaining a few, one ceases the remaining superior and progressive wholesome states. 7. Cultivation through correct mindfulness: to counteract the secondary affliction of forgetting the honored teachings. 8. Cultivation through correct comprehension: to counteract the secondary affliction of transgressions and regrets. Transgressions and regrets means behaving improperly regarding coming, going, and other matters, first violating the precepts and later producing regret and vexation. 9. Cultivation through non-negligence: to counteract the secondary affliction of abandoning the wholesome yoke. Abandoning the wholesome yoke means that, due to the fault of negligence, with respect to the superior and progressive wholesome states cultivated, one abandons diligent upāya and cannot bring them to completion." Explanation: The present sūtra has only four, but the text of the commentary subsumes the nine under the four, and the text has three parts: first, clarifying the intention behind diligence.
