Regarding the commentary's "Therefore it is collectively called diligence" and so forth: explaining the name. In this there are three: 1. direct explanation; 2. variant names; 3. distinguishing between pervasive and restricted. Now first, dividing into two: first, following the preceding identification of the essence to explain the general name; second, from "the former two are diligent abandoning" downward, explaining the specific names, the meaning of which corresponds to discerning their characteristics. In this there are three: first, condensing the four into two, which do not go beyond halting evil and performing good. 2. "Both the two evils and two goods are objective spheres": clarifies the three objective spheres. 3. From "Unarisen in the former" downward: distinguishes the four distinct characteristics. "Halting unarisen evil to make it not arise": "halt" means stop. The sūtra says, "in order that they do not arise." The Yogācārabhūmi states, "If not yet combined and not yet manifest, it is called unarisen. In order to make it not arise, one arouses aspiration: 'I shall cause all of those never to arise again.'" As for "severing arisen evil to make it not continue": the sūtra says, "in order to sever." The Yogācārabhūmi states, "Already combined and already manifest is called arisen. In order to sever what has already combined before, one arouses aspiration: 'Regarding all those evil things, I will not endure them, but will sever and eradicate them.'" Explanation: Merely making them not continue is severing and eradicating. Hence Master Yuan said: "Having already arisen, they have passed away into the past; how could they be eliminated? This is severing the class of what has already arisen, so that what is in the future is not allowed to continue; it does not mean severing what has already arisen and perished."
