疏「精進為其自體」者，第二出體，即善十一中勤也。《唯識》云「勤謂精進，於善惡品修斷事中勇捍為性，對治懈怠滿善為業。勇表勝進，揀諸染法；捍表精純，揀淨無記，即顯精進唯善性攝。」釋曰：勇明念念高勝，非如染法設雖增長，望諸善品皆名為退，不得名進。捍表精純，不同無覆無記之淨也。

Regarding the commentary's "Vigor is its essence": second, identifying the essence, which is diligence among the eleven wholesome [mental factors]. The Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi states: "Diligence refers to vigor; its nature is boldness and resilience regarding matters of cultivation and abandoning among wholesome and unwholesome classes, and its function is counteracting indolence and fulfilling the wholesome. 'Boldness' indicates superior progression, setting aside all defiled dharmas; 'resilience' indicates pure refinement, setting aside pure indeterminate [states], thereby revealing that vigor is subsumed exclusively under the wholesome nature." Explanation: "Boldness" clarifies being elevated and superior in thought after thought, not like defiled dharmas which, even if they increase, are all called "retreating" when compared to wholesome classes, and cannot be called "progressing." "Resilience" indicates pure refinement, distinct from the purity of non-obscured indeterminate states.
