Regarding the commentary's "fifth, the five powers": the commentary's text has two parts: first presenting the essence, and then explaining the name from "Māra and Brahmā" onward. Within this there are two: first, not being subdued by the lower stages; second, being able to subdue others. These two meanings are named "powers." Within the first, there are two parts. First, the Abhidharmasamuccaya-vyākhyā and the twenty-ninth fascicle of the Yogācārabhūmi state: "Furthermore, if one thoroughly understands that the prior and subsequent realizations have differences, and according to this is able to generate deep, resolute conviction in the progressively subsequent realizations of supramundane dharmas, because it is difficult to overpower, it is called the power of faith. Who cannot overpower this pure faith? Whether gods, Māra, śramaṇas, brāhmaṇas, or others in the world, there are none who can captivate or snatch it away in accordance with the Dharma. Entangling defilements also cannot overpower it; hence it is called difficult to overpower. With this as chief and this as forerunner, the remaining diligence and so forth are also named powers."
