Regarding the commentary's "sixth, the seven limbs of awakening (bodhyaṅga)": the commentary's text has six parts: (1) explaining the name, (2) presenting the essence, (3) explaining the text, (4) distinguishing the fruit, (5) the stages, and (6) contemplation of principle. In the first, there are two parts: first, generally explaining the name; second, from "if according to the stages" onward, specifically showing the essence of awakening, explaining and completing the meaning of awakening; this is an explanation of the common name. Thus the Yogācārabhūmi states: "The wisdom of awakening in accordance with reality belonging to those persons (pudgala) who have already realized and entered the state of correctness and freedom from birth uses these as limbs; therefore they are called limbs of awakening." This is the intention of explaining the name. It is also the focal object; thus the Abhidharmasamuccaya-vyākhyā states: "The focal object of the seven limbs of awakening refers to the real nature (dharmatā) of the four noble truths; 'real nature' is the ultimate truth (paramārtha), because it is a purified focal object." Therefore the commentary says: "Awakening to the intrinsic nature of dharmas." The "intrinsic nature of dharmas" is precisely the real nature of the four truths. Awakening is precisely the function of the aforementioned wisdom of awakening in accordance with reality. By means of the contemplated object, the meaning of awakening is explained and completed; also, by means of that which is capable of awakening, the contemplated object is revealed: the two meanings complement each other.
