On the commentary passage from “Arising again” onwards: it discriminates the link of name-and-form. In the commentary there are two parts: first, explaining the general sentence, and second, from “namely” onwards, explaining the specific sentences. In the general part, the statement that “the active manifestations of name and so forth all constitute birth, aging, and death” includes the five results under “and so forth.” That is, consciousness, name-and-form, the six sense bases, contact, and feeling—from the initial taking of rebirth right up through feeling, all the stages of increase and growth of these five are collectively termed 'birth'; all the stages of decline and alteration are termed 'aging'; and the dissolution of the aggregates is 'death.' They do not depart from these five. Explained according to the three periods of time, the five results of the present are precisely the birth, aging, and death of the past.
