Regarding the Commentary's words, "This teaching explains causes and conditions," below, this clarifies the principle expounded. The expression "causes and conditions" runs through the four teachings: by causes and conditions there is arising and ceasing; by causes and conditions there is identity with emptiness; by causes and conditions there is provisional designation; by causes and conditions there is the middle way. Because causes and conditions are primary, all four teachings partake of them. Regarding "the principle of the four true truths of arising and ceasing": suffering has affliction as its meaning; accumulation has expanding saṃsāra as its function; the path has eliminating afflictions as its efficacy; cessation has the exhaustion of encumbrances as its name. There is suffering that can be known, accumulation that can be severed, cessation that can be realized, and the path that can be cultivated. In delusion, suffering and accumulation arise while the true path is eliminated; in awakening, suffering and accumulation cease while the correct path arises. Because there is that which can arise and cease, they are called the four truths of arising and ceasing. Because suffering is definitively suffering, and so on, they receive the name "true."
