疏「正教」下，明所被。鹿苑初轉法輪，俱隣五人見諦成道等，但有小乘得道，未有大乘得道，故云正為小乘言「傍化菩薩者」。《智度論》云「佛於《阿含》中雖為彌勒授記，亦不說種種菩薩行。」故菩薩為傍也。

Regarding the Commentary's words, "Directly teaching," below, this clarifies those who are addressed. When the wheel of Dharma was first turned in the Deer Park, Kauṇḍinya and the other five saw the truths and attained the Way; only those of the Small Vehicle attained the Way, and there were not yet those of the Great Vehicle who attained the Way. Therefore it says that it is directly for the Small Vehicle. Regarding "incidentally converting bodhisattvas": the Dazhidulun says, "Although the Buddha conferred prophecy upon Maitreya in the Āgamas, he did not explain the various bodhisattva practices." Therefore bodhisattvas are incidental.
