Regarding the Commentary's statement, "Furthermore, these four similes..." downward: this is the third, the differentiation in terms of non-identity and non-difference. Within this are four: 1. Clarifying non-identity and non-difference in terms of cause and effect; 2. In terms of earlier and later; 3. Concluding with perfect fusion; 4. Concluding by indicating the original intent. Now, the first is divided into two: first, a general indication; second, from "the first one" downward, distinct manifestations. The pond is not the ocean, hence it says "initially different." Entering the ocean is just the water of the pond, hence it says "finally identical." The identity and difference, earlier and later, are differentiation at the beginning and absence of difference at the end. Second, the "mountain simile": from the single ground of the Buddha's cognition arise the mountains of the ten grounds; hence it is called the distinction of the non-distinct. From "the above two" downward concludes what precedes and introduces what follows. Third, the ocean: then cause and effect interpenetrate. Fourth, the jewel: although it is a single cognition of realization, it does not obstruct dividing into ten.
