Regarding the Commentary's statement, "Furthermore, the ten grounds have three": this is the second, the differentiation in terms of cultivation and manifestation. By means of the three—cultivation, fulfillment, and reality—it subsumes the four similes. The first two are cultivation, hence they are also teaching. The next one is fulfillment, which also accords with realization. The third is the ground of reality, according with the ocean of the Buddha's fruit; thus it uses the ocean simile to fuse the former two. The former two are cultivation and fulfillment, which contain the three similes of the pond, mountain, and jewel.
