73.55

第九定。「謂於毛孔中入眼等定，顯互用自在」者，然常途所明互用者，但眼處能作耳處等事，耳處能作眼鼻事等，故六根互用。今約十八界明，則有數重之互：一諸根互。二分圓互，毛孔身根中互能入眼等定故。三一多互，謂一根頓作多根事故。四根境互，謂根入境定，如〈賢首品〉說。以此云法界，必該十八界故。五復有一根入多境、一境入多根。六復有以六識對境以明互入等也。

In the ninth samādhi: "That is, entering the samādhi of the eyes and so on within a pore reveals the mastery of mutual function." Now, what is ordinarily explained as mutual function is only that the eye can perform the functions of the ear, the ear can perform the functions of the eye and nose, etc., which is the mutual function of the six sense faculties. Here, explained in terms of the eighteen dhātus, there are multiple layers of mutuality: (1) mutuality among the sense faculties; (2) mutuality between part and whole, because within a pore of the body faculty one can mutually enter the samādhi of the eyes, etc.; (3) mutuality of one and many, meaning one faculty instantly performs the functions of many faculties; (4) mutuality of faculties and sense objects, meaning a faculty enters the samādhi of a sense object, as explained in the "Xianshou Chapter," because what is referred to here as the dharmadhātu must encompass the eighteen dhātus; (5) furthermore, one faculty entering many sense objects, and one sense object entering many faculties; (6) furthermore, contrasting the six consciousnesses with sense objects to clarify mutual penetration, and so forth.
