79.23

疏「準五卷大悲經第三云有千葉故」者，結云「阿難！何故名為賢劫？阿難！此三千大千世界，劫欲成時盡為一水，淨居天子以天眼觀見此世界，唯一大水，見有千枚諸妙蓮華，一一蓮華各有千葉，甚可愛樂。彼淨居天因見此華，心生歡喜踊躍無量，而皆讚歎言：『奇哉希有！奇哉希有！如此劫中當有千佛出興於世。』以是因緣，遂名此劫號之為賢劫。我滅度後，當有九百九十六佛。」

Regarding the Commentary's statement, "According to the third fascicle of the five-fascicle Mahākāruṇika-sūtra, it states that there are one thousand petals": the concluding part says: "Ānanda! Why is it called the Bhadrakalpa? Ānanda! In this great trichiliocosm, when the kalpa is about to form, it is entirely a single mass of water. The devaputras of the Śuddhāvāsa heaven look with their divine eye and see that this world is only a single great water; they see one thousand wondrous lotuses, each lotus having one thousand petals, extremely delightful. Because those Śuddhāvāsa devas see these flowers, joy leaps up in their minds measurelessly, and they all praise, saying: 'How wonderful, how rare! How wonderful, how rare! In such a kalpa, one thousand Buddhas will arise in the world!' Through these causes and conditions, this kalpa came to be named the Bhadrakalpa. After my nirvāṇa, there will be nine hundred and ninety-six Buddhas."
