79.88

疏「第五珠消海水喻」，躡前以釋。疏文分二：先明智斷不同、後「又前」下橫竪分別。一佛果中具有四智名橫，菩薩歷位具有四智名竪。言「皆是釋上為依之義」者，即虛空無依為依，喻中之一義也。

Regarding the commentary's "The fifth simile of the pearl dispelling ocean water": this follows upon the preceding to explain it. The commentary text is divided into two parts: first, clarifying that cognition and elimination are not the same; second, from "Furthermore, previously" downward, distinguishing horizontal and vertical. In a single fruition of buddhahood, possessing all four cognitions is called horizontal; a bodhisattva passing through stages and possessing all four cognitions is called vertical. As for "all explain the meaning of being a support above," this refers to empty space having no support yet acting as a support, which is one meaning within the simile.
