Regarding the commentary's statement, "It only states that all practices cultivated are for the sake of sentient beings": this is merely an abbreviation of the meaning. Stated fully: they are all to rescue and protect all sentient beings; 2. to benefit; 3. to bring peace and happiness; 4. to pity; 5. to deliver—all the above share the words "all sentient beings" like the first phrase. 6. to cause all sentient beings to leave calamities; 7. to transcend the suffering of saṃsāra; 8. to give rise to pure faith; 9. to all attain subjugation; 10. to all realize nirvāṇa. The latter five first clarify "causing all sentient beings to...". Regarding the commentary's statement, "together with its superior progressive understanding of sentient beings, etc.": that sūtra states, "A bodhisattva should be encouraged to learn ten dharmas. What are the ten? Namely: knowing sentient beings to be 1. boundless; 2. immeasurable; 3. innumerable; 4. inconceivable; 5. of immeasurable forms; 6. unfathomable; 7. empty; 8. uncreated; 9. non-existent; 10. without intrinsic nature. All share the words 'knowing sentient beings' as in the first phrase."
