Regarding the Commentary's mention of 'Kapphina': the Commentary's explanation follows the ancient translations in the Yinyi, the Mahāyāna master, and Tiantai, rendering it as 'Chamber Constellation'. However, there are two meanings: first, his parents prayed to this constellation and were granted this son; second, he stayed in the same room overnight with the Buddha. That is, when he first went forth and had not yet seen the Buddha, he set out toward where the Buddha was; encountering rain at night, he lodged in a potter's room, making grass his seat. Later in the evening another monk lodged there; he yielded the grass seat to him and sat on the ground himself. In the middle of the night they asked each other: 'Where do you wish to go?' He answered: 'To seek the Buddha.' The other monk then expounded the Dharma, took his leave, and [Kapphina] was suddenly enlightened to the Way. That other monk was the Buddha. The Ekottarika-āgama states: 'Among my disciples in the Buddha's Dharma, Kapphina is foremost in having an excellent knowledge of constellations, the sun, and the moon.' Thus he was also named according to his knowledge.
