疏「又復大乘該於小乘」下，第三通局有殊也。小乘猶如百川，不攝大海；大乘猶如大海，必攝百川。言「小智不知大智」者，即《莊子》意。彼云「小智不測大智、小年不測大年，朝菌不知晦朔、蟪蛄不知春秋。」小乘螢光，豈知日照？

Regarding the Commentary's statement, "Furthermore, the Great Vehicle subsumes the Lesser Vehicle" and so on, this is the third point: explaining the difference between universality and partiality. The Lesser Vehicle is like the hundred rivers, which do not subsume the great sea; the Great Vehicle is like the great sea, which inevitably subsumes the hundred rivers. As for the statement, "Lesser cognition cannot fathom great cognition," this is the meaning from the Zhuangzi, which says: "Lesser cognition does not fathom great cognition; a short life does not fathom a long life. The morning mushroom knows not the day's end and the new moon; the cicada knows not spring and autumn." How could the firefly-glow of the Lesser Vehicle know the radiance of the sun?
