Regarding the Commentary's statement 'the first half is upāya and the second half is purification,' this is because the lower lines of each contain the words upāya and purification. As for the statement 'the upper lines are all fruit and the lower lines are cause,' speaking from the predominant aspect, upāya is the cause and purification is the fruit. If speaking from general application, both pertain to cause and fruit. With respect to cause, upāya is skillfully generating the land. With respect to fruit, upāya means that the activities of the insentient environment and sentient beings are the characteristics of a pure land. With respect to cause, purification is being pure from all hindrances and coverings; with respect to fruit, it is because there are no three evil destinies, eight difficulties, and so forth.
