Regarding the Commentary's statement 'the eighth is like Maitreya's coming,' this is expounded in the Maitreyavyākaraṇa-sūtra. The Buddha told Śāriputra: 'The waters of the four great oceans will gradually decrease by three thousand yojanas. At that time, the land of Jambudvīpa will be ten thousand yojanas long and eight thousand yojanas wide, level and smooth like a mirror, with celebrated flowers and soft grass covering the earth everywhere, and all kinds of trees, flowers, and fruits flourishing abundantly, the trees all being thirty li high. Cities and towns will be contiguous, so close that chickens fly from one to the next. Human lifespan will be eighty thousand years, fully endowed with wisdom, majestic virtue, physical form, and strength, peaceful and joyful. There will be a great city named Ketumatī, twelve yojanas long and seven yojanas wide. This city will be made of the seven jewels, with upper pavilions, doors, windows, and casements above, all covered with nets of various jewels and pearls. The moats will be twelve li wide, and streets and lanes everywhere will have pillars of bright jewels and everywhere heaps of gold and silver. For urination and defecation the earth will split open to receive it, and having received it, close up again; there will also be no decline, affliction, water, fire, weapons of war, famine, or poisonous harm. Parks, groves, and ponds will be filled with water of eight meritorious qualities and all kinds of flowers and rare fragrances, without weeds or filth growing. Sowing once yields seven harvests, with an extremely fragrant and delicious taste that enhances physical form and strength,' and so on, as expounded at length there.
