Regarding the Commentary's statement 'Vimalakīrti pressing the earth with his toe,' this is expounded in the 'Buddha Land' chapter: in accordance with the purity of their mind, the Buddha-land is pure. At that time Śāriputra, receiving the Buddha's spiritual power, thought: 'If the Buddha-land is pure in accordance with the bodhisattva's pure mind, could it be that when our World-Honoured One formerly practiced the bodhisattva path, his mind was not pure, such that this Buddha-land is impure like this?' The Buddha then replied: 'This land of mine is pure, yet you do not see it.' At that time the World-Honoured One pressed the earth with his toe, and immediately the trichiliocosm became a land adorned with several hundreds of thousands of various jewels. The entire great assembly praised it as unprecedented, and all saw themselves seated on jeweled lotuses, and so forth; this is it.
