Regarding the commentary's "The phrase 'Who is the self?' already embraces both kinds of self": above, explaining "Who is the self?" according to the contemplation of the analysis of dhātus only dispelled the self of persons; only in the subsequent second verse did it dispel the self of dharmas. Now, according to the Mahāyāna applications of mindfulness, it embraces both kinds of self. That is, seeking a controller within the four great elements and five aggregates, none can be found at all; merely the aggregation of the skandhas and so forth means there is no self of persons. Contemplating the characteristics of the skandhas and so forth as empty because they are produced through conditions means there is no self of dharmas.
