Regarding the commentary’s 'Leaving behind arrogance and disrespect' and so forth, fascicle thirty-eight of the Yogācārabhūmi says: 'Listening to the Dharma leaves behind the defilement of arrogance through six aspects, leaves behind the defilement of disrespect through four aspects, and leaves behind the defilement of cowardice through one aspect. The six aspects are: 1. listening in due time, 2. listening with earnestness, 3. listening with reverence, 4. not doing so for injury, 5. not doing so for mere compliance, and 6. not seeking faults. The four aspects are: 1. revering the true Dharma, 2. revering the person who speaks, 3. not slighting the true Dharma, and 4. not slighting the person who speaks. The one aspect is not slighting oneself. Only when endowed with the above meanings is it called good listening.'
