Regarding the Commentary's statement, 'It is not merely that apprehending characteristics is defilement and having no mind is purity': this concludes by critiquing the Northern School of Chan as only attaining one portion of the meaning. That is, they say: 'When the eye sees form, if the mind concurs and recognizes, it is the defiled dharmadhātu; if the mind does not concur and recognize, it is the pure dharmadhātu. When the mind concurs and recognizes, that is the Eye Dhāraṇī Sovereign Buddha, the eye and so on as dhāraṇīs and gates of deliverance,' and so forth. We now say that this is also one meaning, but it only attains the meaning of thoughts not arising, which is unlike the ten levels and five pairs of non-obstruction and sovereignty described above.
