Regarding the commentary's statement, 'The above explained the capacity to refute, while this reveals the capacity to establish': this explains the general intention. The Hetuvidyāśāstra states: 'Establishing and refuting, along with their semblances, serve solely to enlighten others. Direct perception and inference, along with their semblances, serve solely to enlighten oneself.' This single verse contains a total of eight meanings: 1. genuine establishing; 2. semblance of establishing; 3. genuine refuting; 4. semblance of refuting; 5. genuine direct perception; 6. semblance of direct perception; 7. genuine inference; 8. semblance of inference. Here, since it distinguishes benefiting others, it explains only establishing and refuting. Furthermore, because a bodhisattva is free from faults, there are only genuine establishing and refuting, and no semblances of establishing or refuting. Regarding the commentary's passage beginning with 'Furthermore, the above five obstacles': second, it subsumes them again in a general explanation; it is not necessary to relate them to an opponent, but rather to cause all bodhisattvas to be free from these five [obstacles], whereby they attain bodhi.
