Regarding the commentary's phrase “Again, gathering these ten to form three aggregates” and so forth: second, identifying the essence in terms of the five aggregates. In detail, there are three meanings: First, identifying the essence strictly according to reality: there are only three aggregates. Second, from “among the five categories of phenomena” downward: identifying the essence according to the five categories. Because conditioning forces (saṃskāra) are gathered as mental concomitants, among the five categories there are only two categories; thus there is no primary mind or non-associated [conditioning forces], and neither are there unconditioned phenomena. Third, from “if taking their companions” downward: identifying the essence through association. The concomitant factors must rely on primary mind, and must rely on perception (saṃjñā) to grasp the characteristics of the body and so forth; thus the *Abhidharmasamuccaya-vyākhyā* says: “Companions refer to that associated mind and mental factors, etc.”
