Regarding the Commentary's 'Fifth: from "Sons of the Buddha" down to the fruits of dual practice' and so forth: the text of the Commentary has five parts: 1. Explaining the general title. 2. From 'The text divides' onward, opening the sections. 3. From 'Master Yuan' onward, distinguishing what it follows from. 4. From 'Moreover, the first one' onward, distinguishing the marks of dual practice. 5. From 'Within the initial fruit' onward, explaining the text. In part three, because the Commentary's intent is comprehensive, it quotes Master Yuan's restrictive allocation. Within it are four: (1) Due to detachment from hindrances, reaching this point the three karmas are all pure. (2) Because the preceding dual practice is not abandoned for a single thought-moment, the samādhi of the dual practice of śamatha and vipaśyanā increasingly intensifies, and is therefore called superior. (3) As superior practice increasingly intensifies, one is therefore able to surpass the ground. (4) Because previously there was the wisdom of skillful means giving rise to extraordinary practice, now this practice is completed, termed attaining superior practice. From 'Moreover, the first' onward, it distinguishes the characteristics of practice in both aspects.
