Regarding the commentary's phrase, 'Only in classifying the Avataṃsaka,' this is the third [section], which re-examines the Perfect and Distinct teachings, determining what to accept and reject, since that [master] classified the various sūtras [thereby]. He stated that the Avataṃsaka combines them, meaning that it combines the Distinct Teaching. This is being deluded by its sequential arrangement and taking it to be the Distinct Teaching, while only taking its interpenetration to be the Perfect Teaching. If split into two teachings, each loses one side; only when united and integrated do they become the definitive meaning, conforming to the Huayan lineage, because sequential arrangement and interpenetration subsume each other. This is as explained earlier under the stages of practice. If one concedes to [his view], the names are different but the meaning is the same, so there is no great fault. If one refutes it, it loses the original intent of the Avataṃsaka; therefore, we do not accept it here. For this reason, this passage is titled 'Determining What to Accept and Reject.' The remaining meanings are extensively found in the four teachings, and the essentials are already complete.
