Eighth, shadow-like forbearance. Regarding the commentary's "Its nature is non-cultivation, yet its characteristics are not abandoned": this explains and establishes the meaning of dual illumination. As the previous text said, "It is not worldly, its meaning corresponds to supra-worldly." The subsequent line said, "It is not supra-worldly," which brushes away the aforementioned supra-worldly. Brushing away both worldly and supra-worldly is called dual occlusion. In the present text, if it were to say 'not cultivating the bodhisattva practices,' it would correspond to dual occlusion; since it says 'not abandoning the great vows,' it is clearly dual illumination. That is, not cultivating the bodhisattva practices is illuminating the real; not abandoning the great vows is illuminating the provisional; thus it receives the name 'dual illumination.' Next, clarifying 'neither real nor unreal' likewise by analogy dually illuminates the ultimate and the conventional.
