The Commentary states: "If one does not believe..." and below, which again blocks their defense. Fearing they might defend themselves by arguing: "Although it is said that the Lotus [Sūtra] was expounded near [the Buddha's] demise, the term 'near demise' is broad and leaves room for subsequently preaching other sūtras." If they offer such a defense, setting aside the Lotus [Sūtra] for a moment, the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] specifically states that on the fifteenth day of the second month, when [the Buddha] approached nirvāṇa, he proclaimed extinction at dawn and entered nirvāṇa at midnight. This was undeniably the very end, and is naturally worthy of trust. After this, no other sūtra could possibly have been expounded. Yet the Nirvāṇa Sūtra also expounds the single vehicle to overturn the three vehicles, and the single nature to overturn the five natures. Thus, the single vehicle and the single nature likewise stand at the very end. How could one claim they belong to the second period as provisional [teachings]?
