Regarding the commentary's "Third, the final teaching" and so forth: the text of the commentary has three parts: first, positing the name; next, from "the fixed-nature two vehicles" onward, establishing the rationale to explain the name; finally, from "the above two" onward, concluding what precedes to introduce what follows. In the second part, it also contrasts with the two meanings of the second teaching: because previously neither the fixed-nature two vehicles nor icchantikas attained buddhahood, it was called "partial" (fēn) and also called "initial" (shǐ). Now, since it exhausts the principle, it is therefore called "final" (zhōng). It posits the name "true teaching" (shíjiào). This pairs with and contrasts against the previous two: it does not only speak of emptiness, but also speaks of the wondrous existence of the Middle Way; hence it is called "true principle." Since it is not a partial attainment, it is likewise named "true" (shí).
