Regarding the commentary’s section beginning with "Here, the Dharma eye," in the fourth part explaining the Dharma eye, it likewise adduces what that one cannot do to reveal the capability of this one; thus, the statement "all dharmas as they truly are" encompasses both phenomenal reality and noumenal reality. If so, how are the Dharma [eye] and the wisdom [eye] distinguished? Both the Dharma eye and wisdom eye take the mental factor of wisdom (prajñā) as their essence. Within the five eyes, two meanings naturally exist: First, the wisdom eye has fundamental non-conceptual wisdom as its essence, while the Dharma eye has subsequently attained wisdom as its nature. Second, it is said: the Dharma eye takes its name from the dharmas that are known, and what is known also extends to principle; the wisdom eye takes its name from the cognition that knows. Now, we take precisely the latter meaning, which reveals that the wisdom eye also extends to both kinds of wisdom.
