Twenty-first: The Dual Flow of Compassion and Wisdom. Question: Profound prajñā penetrates directly to the source of the mind; why is it necessary for the compassionate mind to engage with phenomena and flow actively? Answer: The great ocean of the Buddhadharma consists essentially only of these two: wisdom reaches the true realm, while compassion provides universal succour. If there is compassion without wisdom, views of attachment arise; if there is wisdom without compassion, one falls to the stage of the two vehicles. Now, using wisdom that forgets contrivance to guide compassion that is without condition, one does not get stuck in the two extremes of emptiness and existence, nor does one abide in nirvāṇa or saṃsāra. Therefore, though engaging with existence to transform beings, one is never deluded about emptiness; though contemplating quiescent cessation without mind, one transforms the four types of birth and nine classes of beings. Just as two wheels reach far, when compassion and wisdom are both complete, the fruit is perfected. Respectfully answered.
