Twenty-second: The Dual Operation of Śamatha and Vipaśyanā. Question: In the Buddhadharma, wisdom is the chief; one should only cultivate wisdom, for the six pāramitās and ten thousand practices all realize bodhi. Why do the sūtras exclusively illuminate samādhi and prajñā, or speak of their dual practice? How can the characteristics of their dual practice be seen? Answer: Although wisdom is exalted, without samādhi its illumination is not deep. Although the ten thousand practices are broad, these two alone are supreme—just like Qian and Kun in the Book of Changes, or the sun and moon in the heavens. Without wisdom, dhyāna cannot fathom quiescence; without dhyāna, wisdom cannot deepen its illumination. Therefore, only when quiescence and wisdom flow together is the fruit of buddhahood achieved. A sūtra says: 'The Buddha himself abides in the Great Vehicle, / In accordance with the Dharma he has obtained; / Adorned with the power of samādhi and prajñā, / By this he delivers sentient beings.' Respectfully answered.
