Explanation: In the verse, the first half versifies the dharmas of the ten abodes; the second half sequentially versifies the dharmas of the ten practices. Although the numbers of dharmas in the chapters are of many kinds, for now we follow the names to manifest their numbers. Although the practices cultivated by bodhisattvas have many gates, when investigating their essentials they do not exceed eight kinds. What are the eight? First, the ten abodes; second, the ten practices; third, the ten treasuries; fourth, the ten dedications; fifth, the ten stages; sixth, the ten concentrations; seventh, the ten superknowledges; eighth, the ten patiences.
What are the ten abodes? First, the abode of initial generation of the mind; second, the abode of clearing the ground; third, the abode of cultivation; fourth, the abode of noble birth; fifth, the abode of complete skillful means; sixth, the abode of the correct mind; seventh, the abode of non-regression; eighth, the abode of the youthful state; ninth, the abode of the dharma prince; tenth, the abode of coronation.
Explaining the names of these abodes is divided broadly into two: first, the general; second, the specific. First, for the general name: here the bodhisattva initially settles their mind; in practices such as the six pāramitās they are not yet preeminent, so they merely obtain the name 'abode'.
Second, for the specific names: 1. In this stage, the bodhisattva initially generates the great bodhicitta, hence named the 'abode of generating the mind'. 2. In this stage, the bodhisattva purifies the three karmas and extends compassion to sentient beings, hence named the 'abode of clearing the ground'. 3. In this stage, the bodhisattva cultivates superior contemplation of principle and initiates excellent practices, hence named the 'abode of cultivation'. 4. In this stage, the bodhisattva is born from the noble dharmas and correct teachings, hence named the 'abode of noble birth'. 5. In this stage, all roots of goodness cultivated by the bodhisattva are for rescuing beings, hence named the 'abode of complete skillful means'. 6. In this stage, upon hearing praise or blame the bodhisattva's mind is settled and unmoving, hence named the 'abode of the correct mind'. 7. In this stage, upon hearing of the Three Jewels and the existence or nonexistence of the three temporal periods, the bodhisattva's mind is firm and unturning, hence named the 'abode of non-regression'. 8. In this stage, the bodhisattva's three karmas are pure, they realize the two realms, the real selects against the false, and 'youthful' signifies being free from fault, also like the practice of an infant in the *Nirvāṇa [Sūtra]*, hence named the 'abode of the youthful state'. 9. In this stage, the bodhisattva understands the real and conventional truths, awakens to the Dharma King's Dharma, and is about to inherit it, hence named the 'abode of the dharma prince'. 10. In this stage, the bodhisattva is like a crown prince worthy of receiving the royal throne, their practices gradually becoming superior, hence named the 'abode of coronation'.
